An extremely creative novel without a doubt. Very interesting premise and in terms of plot it played out in an ingenious way. Characters were unique, could have been fleshed out a bit more, but overall most of the characters had a tangible feel to them evoked by the novel's spare but skillful descriptions. My main issue is that, although I think it is a good thing to throw the reader right into the middle of a story and make them think on their feet, this novel left me often checking if I'd missed the first book in a series. It threw me right in what felt like the middle of a plot with characters that I didn't feel I had time to care about one way or the other. The result was I didn't get drawn in to any of them enough to carry me to the end and felt myself struggling to make it to the final conflict.
Still worth reading for the brilliant new horror ideas throughout the novel - just hope his next book focuses just a tad more on any form of exposition and getting the reader to identify even remotely with key characters.

This dark fantasy masterpiece takes genre fiction to a whole new level. A plot that crackles, characters whom one cares about and wonderfully visual storytelling blows most other authors away. From the very beginning,I cared for Teresa and Martin. At the end, I cried like a baby. Good horror writing scares the reader; great horror writing scares and moves the reader. This is great horror.
Are you looking for a book that is a little bit different from the normal stuff? This is for you. A great cast of characters and a story line that can continue for a long time. Teresa is really pissed off now and healed enough to kick some serious ass. I don't think Martin is all the way dead. And Cloth? How do you kill something that is not alive in this world. I can't wait to find out.
Fantastic! That's really the only word I can think of to use for this review. This is one fantastic novel, and such a perfect read right before Halloween! Mr. Ethridge has created a sinister universe that is so real, and so creepy that I couldn't put this book down! I was continually reminded of the long and epic novels of Clive Barker (Weaveworld in Halloween-town, anyone?). Such a wonderful array of characters, as well! I don't think I'll ever look at a jack o' lantern the same way again!
Well, this was a strange one, but also brilliant. Thrown right into the middle of things, it takes a little time to get a handle on the characters, and to care about what they are experiencing, but when you do, you really do.
I have never read a story like this one before, and can draw no comparisons on the writing style, it belongs entirely to Benjamin. It is well worth a read for the brilliant writing alone, not to mention the exciting action plot, and the fantasy world you are drawn in to.
Well worth reading.
Interesting concept but nothing earth-shattering as some of the reviews would lead you to believe. Not much character depth, but he tried at least. The book just reminded me of reading someone's creative writing paper in undergrad interesting ideas and some fun themes, but needs a bit of work. The Author is essentially in love with his writing style which lead to quite a few over-the-top fancy-pants sentences that made me roll my eyes and skip the paragraph. The entire book is also sprinkled with typos, which was obnoxious.
Benjamin Kane Etheridge has created an amazingly complex mythos for Black & Orange. There's the Church of Midnight, a mysterious organization whose goal is to unite with the Church of Morning located in the Old Domain, a place separate from the real world and filled with horrors.
Each Halloween there is a temporary opening between worlds and there are forces at work to make the opening permanent and another group whose goal it is to keep it closed.
To keep the portal closed is the job of two Nomads assigned to protect that year's Heart of the Harvest. If they fail and the Heart is captured then the opening between worlds grows closer to permanence. On the other hand, if the Heart is protected, the Church of Midnight must wait until next Halloween before trying again.
In order to assist in protecting the Heart of the Harvest, the Nomads are endowed with magical powers, specifically, the ability to create mantles, I think of these as magical apps.
Opposing them are members of The Church of Midnight. In addition to trying to locate the Heart of the Harvest, there is a good deal of in-fighting amongst the Bishops of the church. One of my favorite lines in the book concerns newly appointed Bishop Paul Quintana, "He'd even killed Justin, blew his best friend's head into vulture kibble, just to sit in this chair, just to say hello to her."
Black & Orange is challenging fare, but certainly worth the effort. It actually won the Bram Stoker award for best First Novel. One of the things that makes this story work so well is the way the writer breathes so much life into the people in the book. They're more than just characters moving through plot twists. Even though the subject matter is fanciful, they seem more like real people dealing with real issues.
I certainly wouldn't recommend Black & Orange for younger readers or the prudish, but if your up for an immersive read please do check this one out.
Black & Orange
Having read and enjoyed Ethridge’s Bottled Abyss, I was looking forward to reading Black and Orange to see if he had the goods over the course of different storylines, and I wasn’t disappointed. Abyss was good; Black and Orange is incredible, one of the best books, horror or otherwise, I have read in years. There is a big difference between writing and storytelling, and many writers unfortunately prove that the two do not always go hand in hand. So it is so refreshing to find a talent like Ethridge, both a great, lyrical writer as well as a ridiculously creative storyteller. Black and Orange is a supernatural mix of a Clive Barkerish otherworld and Lovecraftian horrors, but Ethridge manages to make the story his own with a descriptive and powerful voice unmatched by very few giants of the genre today. Very highly recommended.
