The Night We Said Yes Lauren Gibaldi Books

The Night We Said Yes Lauren Gibaldi Books
Actual rating 2.5 stars.I picked up ‘The Night We Said Yes’ solely due to the hype it had been receiving on the blogosphere, the gorgeous cover, and a catchy blurb…
Though honestly, by the halfway point I was bored. The reasons behind Matt (the love interest) moving away had me intrigued, and the dual narrative from the present, alternated with that from a year ago and added interest, but the characters came across as bland and silly. I was still waiting to be gripped by something.
‘The Night We Said Yes’ is a story about flawed characters. It’s well written, but on the whole, it’s a story that could be of any teenager… and that was just it… I felt like it was an anecdote from my past, or my friends past. There wasn’t anything extraordinary to grip me from this tale.
The teen drama was just so juvenile. The behaviour of the main characters was frustrating. And the storyline very, very simple. I wanted more complexity, more tension. The stakes for the protagonist, Ella, just didn’t seem that high. Maybe it was because I didn’t connect with the cast, or the plot.
It’s not a book I would bash for being poorly written or having sub-par construction – like I mentioned, its done well, but just not for me. It’s fairly short and easy to read in one sitting. I spread it over a few days, putting it down frequently due to boredom or annoyance. I think the younger end of the YA spectrum of readers would enjoy this more.
Overall this book felt a little – I hate to say it – bland. It is a cute contemporary, but there wasn’t anything about it that grabbed my attention, and I did not connect solidly with any of the characters or their predicament.

The Night We Said Yes Lauren Gibaldi Books Reviews
Just what my daughter wanted, couldn't be more pleased!
A really great read and incredibly well written The characters have depth which beautifully unfolds through the story. Nostalgic and rewarding the whole way through!
Loved this book! Definitely recommend.
This book is one of the only young adult books I read last year but I am so glad that I did. TNWSY is almost everything a good YA book should be. The story was wonderful, the friendship between Ella and Meg was one of my favorite things and the pacing between what had happened before and what was happening in present time was perfect. Wing King and "High Five for Friendship" are permanently imprinted in my head.
This is a book with very few errors (writing, grammar or technical), which is great with YA romances, and rare. That said, it could have been better. The characters are all good and engaging/appealing, but as another reviewer wrote, not a lot happens. The format is Then/Now/Then/Now, etc., with time line changes with each chapter. This starts out well, but eventually becomes confusing because both time lines are filled with the same people and the same or very similar events and places. The dramas of these kids becomes a bore, honestly. The reason Matt left was never fully convincing to me (I was thinking maybe a death in the family or even a Witness Protection thing). Both Ella and Meg do this "I can't forgive him" thing and then they both do.
It was cute, but also a bit of a drag, I found.
There's a kind of magic surrounding your teen years, that place/time where new and possible are bigger and stronger than reality. That will come soon enough, so for those teenagers who are able to latch on to the new and possible, memories are created that last a very long time. This is a book about finding those pieces of magic, suddenly losing them and maybe, just maybe, having a chance to get them back before reality takes over.
Ella just wants to get over the pain of breaking up and get on with her life. In a few weeks, she'll be off to college where she may find someone to fill the hole left when Matt abruptly disappeared. Before that happened, they had wonderful times together that started the night they met at a party and agreed to say yes to everything that the night offered. Then he vanished without even saying goodbye, leaving Ella feeling like she's at a funeral without a body.
Fast forward and all of a sudden Matt is back and convinces a semi-reluctant Ella to try one more night of saying yes, even though her hurt is still big enough so she's leaning toward telling him to get lost.
Told in alternating chapters from 'then' and 'now' readers get a look at why they clicked and how their mutual group of friends helped create their magic. In fact Meg, her best friend and Jake, Meg's often immature and annoying boyfriend are great characters and add a lot to the story. I particularly like how their often tempestuous romance helps Ella realize that love is mixed-up and often messy, but totally worth it.
While not perfect, this is a great fun read for romantics of all ages, but teens who have been burned or are wondering whether romance is worth risking getting hurt will really enjoy it.
This book is just really cute. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It's written in NOW and THEN format. THEN is a year ago - the night that Matt and Ella met. It was a long and wild night of saying "yes" to everything. NOW, a year later, Matt is back in town after moving away abruptly 6 months ago and breaking ties with Ella and his best friend, Jake. Ella doesn't want to let Matt know how much he hurt her, but she isn't ready to let go either. Matt and Ella have another night of saying "yes".
The friendships in this story were so great - Ella, Meg, and Jake have been friends for a long time. When Matt joins Jake's band, they form an instant connect, as do Matt and Ella. I found myself routing for Matt and Ella in the past and in the present. This story was almost a double love story. The time periods were woven together so well with the two nights really following a parallel structure as Matt is trying to re-enact that first night with Ella.
There were a lot of great moments. The characters seemed real, and I connected with them all right away. And although Matt and Jake are in a band, this story isn't too music-y.
