I had high hopes for this book and it didn't quite deliver. The first third of the book was really good. The story captured my attention and I liked the characters, but it began to peter off halfway through the book and by the end, I was struggling to keep my interest. The hero and heroine had such potential, but just didn't quite commit to it.The heroine struggles with trust issues and a scarred past, but she mostly seems to get over it quite quickly. The beginning of the story, when she is struggling with her history is compelling, but she suddenly decides she's going to let it go and just does. She suffered an extremely traumatic event, yet seemed to get past it relatively easily once the story got underway, which was really disappointing. (SPOILER) At one point, it is hinted that the heroine was raped by the man who murdered her father and the hero's father. It's never stated, though it's obvious, and then it's never brought up again. As far as I can tell, she was more traumatized by the fact that the hero blew her off when she asked for help or witnessing the murder than being raped and giving birth to her rapist's baby. It was strange that it was such a strong story line, yet then dropped the minute it's revealed (and very subtlety mentioned).
I loved the hero, though it was a little inconsistent. He's oblivious and can't remember very important moments, yet then can remember very detailed conversations that were rather unimportant at other times.
I give it 3 stars for the first half, but the second half is a solid 2 stars for me. Where the first few books I read from this author made me was to jump into buying anything she wrote, this book has made me more purchase shy.

And I was right. It was very forced and drawn out for the sake of writing a book and just made the story seem very fake and unbelievable. The characters didn’t seem real, all they ever did was talk about their happy little past and emotionally tragic present. Also, for someone who is crushed about losing his best friend, he sure didn’t jump to marry her when he found her. Even the romantic parts were just ‘blah’ for me because the writing lacked depth and genuine relatability in the main characters. If she had just said what had happened to her in the first few chapters the book would have been the same.... but we could skip over the confusing and irrationally placed flashbacks and weeping about losing her happy past. If I have to read about another one of their childhood tickle fights in a tree with Elise pouting about something or other, I will throw up.
I first read this story years ago when it was self-published, and loved it. I had a friend in serious need of a good clean romance (and some chocolate -- you know those days), so I did what any true friend would do, and mailed her my copy. A while later, I realized that I really wanted to read it again, even though I knew how the mystery was solved. The characters were that memorable. Unfortunately, when I went online to buy myself a new copy, the author had taken all her books off and I had to wait years for them to be published by an actual company one-by-one (good for Sarah, not for me). Finally, "For Elise" is back!
Yes, I enjoyed it again. The author paced it well and included the banter that us fans of hers expect and adore. Thanks, Sarah!
I've enjoyed all of her books, especially "Seeking Persephone" (which I was smart enough to keep my original copy of). If you are looking for more books like Sarah's, try "Edenbrooke" by Julianne Donaldson. As soon as I read the last page, I wanted to turn to the beginning and start again!
I have been anxiously awaiting the re-release of this book and started reading it as soon as I saw it download with the pre-order. I read straight to the end, finishing at 4am. The writing is superb, as it is in all of Sarah's books, and the addition of a mystery (vs. just a romance) was a nice surprise! Miles is as lovable and admirable as the heroes in Sarah's other books, and the love story has a nice depth. Like Sarah's other books, the story is completely clean (no foul language, no sexual innuendo, etc.).
It does have some tragic content, though, that made the story a little bit too much like watching the news and less like the break from reality that I seek when reading a Regency romance. Sarah presented the content tastefully and skillfully, but it still made the book a little more serious than I prefer. I give the book 5 stars for the excellent writing, story line, and character development. As compared to her other books and how much I absolutely loved them, I give this one 3.5 or 4 stars.
This is one of those stories where you, as a reader, are left in the dark along with the main character about something critical in the story. I enjoy mystery, to an extent, but when it takes 17 chapters of frustration and repetition to uncover the real reason behind Elise's disappearance, I am ready to give up. The characters weren't compelling to me. Their romance is based on childhood memories and physical attraction. It just wasn't exciting to me. Like another reviewer mentioned, it wasn't one of those books that kept me up at night, flying through the pages. I really just wanted to trudge along and finish it so I could feel like I got my money's worth. I have read many of Sarah M. Eden's novels and there are a few I really loved...this one was just a miss for me.
