When I read the synopsis, I thought this was going to be a cute friends-to-lovers/enemies-to-lovers story. Misha meeting his longtime pen pal, only to realize she isn’t who he’s cooked up in his mind. However, the author did something so completely different. Not only is this a story between two best friends, but it’s kind of a story about finding yourself, too. You see, Ryen is not a likable person. She has spent years building up this person of who she wants to be with Misha. She writes about her inner-self feeling like an outsider, when in fact, she’s one of the popular cheerleaders. She throws people under the bus with snarky comments, bringing them down and making her look good. It’s not hard to figure out why Misha hates the person he sees when he meets her, because she’s nothing like her letters. Heck, I didn’t spend seven years thinking I knew her only to find out it was all a lie, and even I couldn’t stand her.

While Ryen does some really awful stuff, the author somehow redeemed her. Don’t ask me how she did it. I honestly thought I was going to hate this chick throughout the whole story. I think the only reason why I kept reading the story is because Misha was just as rude and mean to her as she was to everyone else. She had no clue who he was, since she met him as Masen, but he knew who she was and he wasn’t afraid to bring her down a few pegs. Now, Misha isn’t perfect either. He does some pretty sketchy stuff and says some pretty awful things to Ryen. He even hides behind his fake identity way past when he should have. However, yet again, the author made him into this character that you couldn’t seem to hate.

There is so much that takes place in this story but I don’t want to give away any plot twists or major spoilers. Just know that this isn’t just about two pen pals. There’s a lot that goes on throughout the story that builds right up until the end. The bombshell that the author dropped at the end had my jaw on the ground. I usually see stuff coming from a mile away, but she had me so focused on one thing that when she revealed a rather large surprise, a ton of pieces started to fall into place that I hadn’t even noticed until that point.

Punk 57 was a great novel. I wish I could tell you why the book is called Punk 57, but that would ruin part of the story. What I can say is that this story had me glued to my seat. Penelope Douglas knows how to write characters in a way that will have you both hating them, and rooting for them at the same time. I’ve really enjoyed all of the books of hers that I’ve read so far. I’m starting to think that she’s an auto-buy for me.

Misha and Ryen pen pal friends who have never met and then one night changes everything...

By chapter 4 I was already cursing and my heart rate was going thinking oh F me what's going to happen. Chapter 4 peeps and I felt like gawd dammit, there is still so much more of this book left. What am I in for??

I continued to devour this. This book was full of drama, misunderstandings, "deception" (I use that term loosely and you will see why when you read it). I literally just read and read waiting for everything to implode between Misha and Ryen.

The relationship between both characters made me feel like I was watching a tennis match on steroids. Hot and cold, with the hot moments making me feel like it was 100 degrees and the cold moments feeling like I was in Siberia.

At 69% I thought OHHHHH NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <insert a litany of cuss words>, OH MY GAWD. I'm freaking out what the heck is going to happen now. I kept reading and reading. Completely captured in the story.

Then AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH WHAAAATTTTTTT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was shocked to my core. So much so that I screamed out loud and scared the cat. I didn't see it coming I wasn't prepared and I am still reeling a bit from what was revealed.

This book was intense and at the end of it delivers a powerful message. Everything is not as it seems. Outward appearances and how one portrays themselves doesn't necessarily give you the truth.

(PureTextuality.com) Pen pals, something lots of people have had at some time during elementary school is the focal point of this story. However, these pen pals have been writing each other for years and years and are no longer little. Paired because their names made them sound like two young boys, these two realized early on that Misha was a boy, and Ryen a girl. Over the years they have become each others best friends. You kind of have to suspend belief a bit when you realize they live only thirty miles apart and have still never met or even called or looked on Facebook for each other. That was their deal. Keep it a secret. When Misha actually meets Ryen one night before his band’s show, he thinks she is faking not knowing who he is. But she isn’t, and what he finds in her is not what he thought to be true about her. So he doesn’t tell her. And he proceeds to never write her again. On Ryen’s part, she can’t understand why he has dropped her. Of course there wouldn’t be a story if they never met again.

Ryen is beautiful, a cheerleader, and very popular. She’s part of that group all high schools have of the popular, but at times not so nice people. She’s eighteen and actually not really happy with herself. She seems to be self confident, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Misha is a member of a local rock band, has already graduated early, and is more than a little bit handsome. He believed Ryen to be sweet, maybe a bit shy, intelligent, and someone that hates the very type of person she actually is. The two together bounce lyrics for Misha’s music off each other. Over the years, she has become his muse. So when she is everything that he doesn’t like in a person, it throws him for a loop.

If it sounds like I have told you a lot about the story-not even close would be my answer. So much happens to both characters along the way. The title may seem weird but I promise, it’s pretty perfect. Both characters are flawed, and one in particular is heartbroken in their real life. This made for a deeper story with several twists, turns, and secrets along the way.

It does end up being a good, but very emotional romance. Don’t write this off as a teenage romance because while it does have some high school stuff, it also addresses things like bullying, mean teens, and even a huge loss. Definitely not your typical teen romance, and actually should fall in the New Adult category. I ended up loving the whole thing. If you are a crier, I would definitely have a box of tissues on hand, because it is packed with an emotional, heartfelt story.

Recommended for adult readers due to intense sensual scenes. Amazing book!
